After the Federal Dance Festival in Braunschweig, some of the group
members went on personal trips, while the rest traveled to
Grevesmühlen, the home of Anngret and Eckard Redersborg. We
visited folklore museums, Baltic seaside resorts, performed with local
groups in various sites and visited the island of Rügen. Also,
we were treated to a fashion show of reproduced costumes by a factory
that produces uniforms and costumes for various folklore
organizations.
The highlight of the trip came when we hoisted the American Flag on a
flag pole and sang both national anthems. It was the first time
since 1945 that an American Flag had flown over Grevesmühlen.
At the end of the war in 1945 American forces had occupied this area
of Mecklenburg, only to withdraw a short time later to allow the
Russian Army to occupy Mecklenburg and Pomerania. This placed
Mecklenburg firmly behind the Iron Curtain.
